8wk Bicycle Education Programme

Cycle Education's  8 week Bicycle Education programme is a primary school based program.  It aims to educate primary school children (aged 9 – 11) in cycling safety and awareness. It increases the safe use of children riding bicycles around their community generating much needed awareness on cycling and road safety as well as encouraging continual good lifelong health and fitness habits.

The program has been independently assessed by ARRB Consulting – October 2006, commissioned by the NRMA – Road Safety Trust and the ARRB review concluded: Bike Ed was a worthwhile program, which should continue to be delivered to Years 3/4 children. Key positives of the program included: It is delivered over an eight-week period and it does not encourage over-confidence.

Outcomes:  

  • Awareness – educating the hazards of navigating a bike through the community
  • Safety – teaching riding techniques and efficient bike handling skills
  • Health – promoting an activity which can become a healthy life long activity
  • Develop - physical and cognitive skills

The 8 wk Bicycle Education Program is about developing responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road.  The course includes both practical and theory lessons.

Included:

  • basic bicycle riding skills,
  • learning bicycle knowledge and maintenance using theory and practical activities
  • safety issues such as helmet use and being visible to other users
  • pedestrian and vehicle awareness
  • cycling hazards including stop and giveway signs and roundabouts
  • practical riding experiences in a number of different environments.
