Cycle Education’s primary school Bike & Road Safety Programme aims to help educate primary school children (aged 9 – 11) in cycling and road safety. This programme increases the safety of children riding bicycles around their community; riding to and from school and generating much needed awareness on cycling and road safety. The programme also encourages continual lifelong health and fitness habits.

How much will it cost?

The total cost of the 4 sessions is $40.00 per student

Cycle Education is committed to helping support financially challenged families and will work with the school to ensure that no student is disadvantaged.

Cost: $40.00 per student, minimum of 18 students per class

Outcomes

The outcomes of the programme are:

  • Raised Awareness – educating students/children of the hazards of navigating a bike through the community
  • Increased Safety – teaching riding techniques and efficient bike handling skills, road and pathway safety
  • Better Health – promoting an activity which can become a healthy life-long habit
  • Developing - physical and cognitive skills

The Bike & Road Safety Programme program is about developing responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road.

Programme Structure

The programme is run over four sessions. The sessions are 1 ½ hours each and include both theory and practical lessons. These are taught at the school and can be included as part of the physical fitness and safety messages in the schools curriculum.

The 4 sessions include

  • revising cycling skills
  • learning bicycle knowledge using theory and practical activities
  • safety issues such as helmet use and being visible to other users
  • In class DVD – Here’s Your Bike, Ed! Followed by a theory summary
  • pedestrian and vehicle awareness
  • cycling hazards including crossing roads, the difference between stop and give way signs and negotiating roundabouts
  • practical riding experiences including a community ride.

What is involved?

Cycle Education will provide:

2 instructors x 4 sessions

Coming to the school to set up:

  • Setting up training materials
  • Packing up training materials
  • Information booklet
  • Water bottles to take home for each child
  • Handouts

The School needs to provide:

  • Identify a class or classes for participation in the program.
  • Send home permission notes and Equipment Safety Check sheets prior to commencement of the program.
  • Bike Ed requires a large level playing area for the outdoors sessions, approximately a basket ball court or bigger.
  • A class teacher or school representative to be present for the duration of each session and at times may be required to assist with the lesson.

The Children need to provide:

Children are required to bring their own helmets and bicycles to school each day of the Cycle Education program. If required we can supply a limited number of bikes and helmets to loan to children who are unable to supply their own equipment.
