Cycle Ed Xmas trivia ride and BBQ, 29 November '08

(3 Dec 2008)

With an ominous forecast leading up to Cycle Eds 1st Trivia ride & BBQ and an overcast start to the Saturday morning I was somewhat concerned how the day would pan out.  Luckily the rain held off for the duration of the ride and at 5pm with everyone returning there were big smiles, a few contentious answers to some clues but overall everyone seemed thoroughly satisfied with having had fun.

With 23 riders entered (3 x solos, 5 x pairs teams, 3 x 3+ teams) maps and clues were handed out, rules read and summarised with ‘have fun, be safe’ and away everyone scattered.  Two and a half hours were spent looking for 26 various locations each with a trivia question attached.

As an organiser marking the answers afterwards (see below), the giggle factor set in. What were some of people thinking? Clearly for many, if you didn’t know the answer one was made up. Such as ‘What is the weight of the granite ball at Questacon?’ it is not 2000kg – two tonne, but a mere 633kgs. Or ‘How many kilometres of urban hedges were pruned by the government until 1954?’ it wasn’t 500km (good guess) but 145km.  It became quite obvious if people did or did not reach the trivia locations.

Without a doubt the best answer, ‘What is the 4 digit number found on the safety sticker on a bicycle helmet,        2 _ _ _? (2063, answer is inside your helmet), came from my own daughter who wrote 8972? Really knowing her background that is just embarrassing, children! As I think about it maybe not as bad as poor Pam’s son’s team, three teenage boys, naming themselves inadvertently Princesses Princesses?? much to their embarrassment.  I think someone from their team had meant to write the Princes, Princes….

Credit has to go to 12yr old Jess, whom he and his dad rode up to Black Mt reservoir to correctly answer the clue.  Of course they were nearly 30min late getting back and technically lost all their points.  But as bribery was fair game and it’s was only a fun silly ride I let them keep all their points, well done.

Finishing up the day was the BBQ dinner and many thanks to those who made or brought desserts to share.  As mentioned earlier there had been a threat of a heavy rain lingering and at 6:17 when there was a HUGE clap of thunder directly above us, those left joined together and helped pack up the event site.  Alas, one poor person who couldn’t make the ride but said he would join us for the BBQ dinner turned up at 6:25, with a lovely dessert pie, to see everything had been packed up, sorry Peter!

Thank you everyone for coming along and making this a fun enjoyable event.  I hope to do something similar next year, new locations & new clues.  And you have to admit it was a fun novel way to have a Christmas party.

Good cheer to you all and I hope to see you all out riding soon.

Raynie

Cycle Ed helps a new rider - makes the news!

July 2008

A call for help to ABC Radio 666 Canberra from a new, very nervous rider Annie Lang made the news with a very successful week of riding tuition from Cycle Ed's Raynie McNee.

See the whole story on the 666 website here.
